SUMMARY:Field Trip to Econolatchee Sandhills Conservation Area
DESCRIPTION:EVENT BY Cuplet Fern Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society (FNPS). St. Johns River Water Management District. Land manager\, Graham Williams\, will be leading this field trip as we learn about the Econ river’s hydrology and the importance of native plants. \n*****Reservations highly limited. Once we reach RSVP capacity\, publicity for this event will be taken down. \n*****An RSVP is required- email cupletfern@gmail.com. FNPS members from any chapter are welcome to attend but an email RSVP is needed. In event of unforeseen circumstances (such as bad weather) we can contact you and cancel plans. Please email us with your day-of cell phone and number of people in your party. \nArrival Time: 8:45am \nPoint of Contact: Mark Kateli \nRSVP REQUIRED: Please email us at cupletfern@gmail.com with your day-of cell phone (for emergency purposes only) and the total number of people in your party. \nLocation: Econolatchee Sandhills Conservation Area: 15227 Lake Pickett Rd\, Orlando\, FL 32820 \nParking: Gravel/dirt parking lot at the main entrance. Ample parking space. There are no restrooms on property. \nEntrance Fee: None. Members report volunteer hours. There are no restrooms on property. \nDetails: \nPlease join Graham Williams\, land manager\, from St Johns Water Management District at the Econolatchee Sandhills Conservation Area where he will discuss native plant ecology and the Econolatchee river’s hydrology. \nGraham Williams works for the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJWMD). He is passionate about Florida’s incredible water resources and hopes to spark your interest in what you can do to help protect Florida’s waterways. Dr. Jennifer Mitchell from SJWMD may also be joining us! \nThe Econ sandhill area protects almost 1.5 miles of the Econlockhatchee River and its associated floodplain and uplands. \nThis property is special because it protects some of the only remaining natural sandhill community in eastern Orange County. Visitors say it also has some of the prettiest floodplain swamp found along the Econlockhatchee River. Though a small property\, it offers almost 3 miles of nice trail where visitors will be able to traverse sandhills to pine flatwoods to swamp and the river within a short distance. \nThis is an easy field trip for avid naturalists and native plant enthusiasts. Youth that are heavily interested in science or nature inclined should also inquire! \nFurther Info: \nhttps://www.sjrwmd.com/lands/recreation/econlockhatchee/ \nhttps://www.sjrwmd.com/static/lands/trailguides/econlockhatchee_sandhillstrail.pdfl

SUMMARY:Fridays for Future Global Climate Strike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Orlando Climate Strike! \nAs Floridians\, we live in the state that will bear the biggest effects of the climate crisis. Help us send a message that we can do better in climate action! Last climate strike\, we made history in Florida as some of the 600\,000 strikers across the U.S. and 4 million strikers worldwide who took to the streets to call for climate action on Sept. 20. We’ve seen Orlando’s climate strikes grow from 11 people in March to 35 people in May to now more than 300 strong! And this is still only the beginning. But we need your help to grow the movement in Central Florida. \nWe will be meeting in-front of Orlando’s City Hall\, holding handmade recycled signs\, hearing speeches from environmental leaders\, peacefully marching through downtown Orlando\, and convening with an after party event TBD to encourage further climate action conversations for attendees. \n*Please bring a homemade sign on recycled material regarding climate action you would like to see in Florida.\n*Please WEAR GREEN to support this day of action. \nSwedish 16-year-old Greta Thunberg started Fridays For Future\, a movement that has sparked students in 150 different countries to strike weekly\, organizing by the tens\, hundreds and even thousands to stand up to local leaders and demand for action to mitigate climate change. On September 20\, there was be a Global Climate Strike\, which invites adults to join students in solidarity\, amplifying their calls to action. December 6th\, let’s make our voice heard more than ever! \nWhy are we striking?\nFlorida needs to be a nation-wide leader in climate action but is falling short. Florida should be leaders in renewable energy\, zero waste initiatives\, protecting vulnerable ecosystems\, environmental justice\, and respect of indigenous land and sovereignty. \nThis is the demands of the Global Climate Strike led by Strike With Us:\nhttps://strikewithus.org/#demands \nThis is the petition Climate Strike Orlando is pushing forward: https://www.change.org/p/joseph-abruzzo-demand-state-renewable-energy-goals-for-florida-support-hb97-sb256 \nJoin us to spread awareness for climate action through our presence and our words. No matter who you are\, your voice matters to peacefully call for action for our environment. \nInstagram: @FridaysForFutureOrlando \nQuestions? Email events@ideasforus.org
