SUMMARY:One Company’s Journey to Plastics and Carbon Neutrality
DESCRIPTION:As the second-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world\, the U.S. will need to cut emissions nearly in half by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2040\, a decade sooner than previously estimated\, in order to limit global warming to 1.5* Celsius. While we expect the incoming Biden-Harris administration to strengthen emissions regulations\, it’s incumbent on businesses to protect their own future by investing in becoming carbon neutral. \nWhile we reduce fossil-fuel use\, we also need to rethink consumer products based on fossil fuels. Plastics survive in the environment for years. A plastic bag can take anywhere from 10-1\,000 years to decompose\, and a plastic bottle can take 450 years. \nWhile we rightly focus attention on emissions reductions\, businesses can also contribute to a healthier ecosystem and their own resilience by reducing or eliminating single-use plastics in their products. \nWe will hear from Dan Bailey\, president of Amavida Coffee Roasters\, about his company’s journey to becoming carbon and plastics neutral. \nIf you have any questions or would like any additional information about this webinar\, please contact Martha Newell-Kinsman (mnewell-kinsman@ceres.org) or Clausell Stokes (cstokes@ceres.org). \nTo better understand the communities we serve at our events\, we invite registrants to voluntarily self-identify their gender and ethnicity. Please note that all of your answers will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used in aggregate.

SUMMARY:Growing Through Crisis - Florida Ethical Business Roundtable Work Session

Your opportunity to discuss with peers how your business is coping with COVID.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the last several months\, we’ve all been running into the fray to provide critical goods and services for our communities. SUMMARY:Florida Vacay 2040
DESCRIPTION:We could all use a vacation from 2020. Speculative Futures Orlando wants to whisk you away to the future as we reimagine Florida tourism.\nWhat will tourism in Florida look like in 20 years? Will the same old players dominate\, or will a new generation of entrepreneurs transform the industry? Can we create a sustainable\, equitable future for tourism in the face of climate change? Will the current pandemic fundamentally alter the way people travel?\nWe’ll be exploring these questions using art and stories created by the Practopia Project with the help of some of Orlando’s top theme park designers and artists. This workshop will be the first in a series of public events to reimagine our community’s preferred futures for tourism.\nThere is little doubt that tourism will look very different by 2040. Now is the time to lend your voice and imagination to help create that future.

DESCRIPTION:Businesses have a big role to play in a capitalist society. They can tip the scales toward the benefit of the few\, with toxic side effects for all; or they can guide us toward better\, more equitable long-term solutions. \nBetter Business tells the story of the rise of a new corporate form – the B Corporation. B Corps undergo a rigorous certification process\, overseen by the non-profit B Lab\, and commit to putting social benefits\, the rights of workers\, community impact\, and environmental stewardship on equal footing with financial shareholders. \nBetter Business explores the rapid growth of companies choosing to certify as B Corps\, both in the United States and internationally; and explains why the future of B Corporations is vital for us all. \nThis discussion will take place from 4PM – 5:30PM on Jan 26th. \nThe discussion will be held virtually via Zoom. Tickets are free but there is a suggested donation of $10. If you are able to contribute $10\, please register using the donation ticket. \nThis event is sponsored by the Best for DMV Campaign and B Local Mid Atlantic. \nAbout the Speaker \nChris Marquis is the Samuel C. Johnson Professor in Sustainable Global Enterprise and Professor of Management at the Cornell University Johnson College of Business. Prior to joining Cornell\, he worked for 10 years at Harvard Business School and has held visiting positions at Harvard Kennedy School\, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology\, Peking University\, Fudan University\, and Shanghai Jiaotong University. Marquis received a PhD in sociology and business administration from the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:A Conservative Approach to Solving Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mr. Bob Inglis\, former South Carolina Congressman and Executive Director of republicEn.org \nAction on climate change has been stifled. Now\, it’s time for conservatives to step up and offer a free-enterprise solution to solve our nation’s climate challenges. And it’s important to get this right before government gets it wrong. Free enterprise in the form of a revenue-neutral\, border-adjustable carbon tax can lead the way. Bob Inglis is helping lead a bipartisan path forward on climate by engaging and building an EcoRight community of conservatives focused on a free-enterprise solution to climate change.

SUMMARY:The Coastal Real Estate Reckoning Is Already Happening
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Professor Benjamin Keys\, Rowan Family Foundation Associate Professor of Real Estate at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania \nIs a U.S. coastal housing bubble bursting? Under most climate forecasts\, the question is not if but when property values will reflect expected sea level rise. This talk will describe research on how climate change is affecting housing and mortgage markets in coastal Florida\, one of the most vulnerable coastline in the world with over 300\,000 homes worth over $145 billion at risk to sea level rise. Solutions to restore confidence in coastal markets include substantial infrastructure improvements and asset repositioning to address the reality of rising seas.
