SUMMARY:The Coastal Real Estate Reckoning Is Already Happening
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Professor Benjamin Keys\, Rowan Family Foundation Associate Professor of Real Estate at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania \nIs a U.S. coastal housing bubble bursting? Under most climate forecasts\, the question is not if but when property values will reflect expected sea level rise. This talk will describe research on how climate change is affecting housing and mortgage markets in coastal Florida\, one of the most vulnerable coastline in the world with over 300\,000 homes worth over $145 billion at risk to sea level rise. Solutions to restore confidence in coastal markets include substantial infrastructure improvements and asset repositioning to address the reality of rising seas.

SUMMARY:Design Thinking - Advancing Sustainable Development Goals (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:The 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda adopted 17 goals called SDGs that promote equitable economic growth\, social development\, and the sustainable management of our environment. These interconnected goals were not only created for countries but also designed to engage civil society and the private sector in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. Human-centered design thinking is a creative approach to problem solving. It is about building deep empathy\, generating tons of ideas\, building prototypes and putting innovative solutions out in world. The design thinking process can be used across industries and sectors to approach any number of challenges from product and service design to space or system designs. \nThis program will help the attendees be effective changemakers by learning some of the key strategies of changemaking through design thinking and advancing the SDGs. This program will examine the social and environmental issues occurring across the globe and connect these issues to the local community by integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and fully embracing the motto “think globally\, act locally”. Participants will learn about the stages and steps of human centered design thinking and how to create project-based activities that advance the SGDs through innovative solutions in their communities or classrooms. \nBy participating in this program\, you can expect to: \n\nUnderstand the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and the triple bottom line;\nlearn about the human- centered design thinking stages of inspiration\, ideation\, and implementation;\ncomprehend how to apply the design thinking steps to a specific design challenge to advance the UNSDGs through an Innovative Solution\n\nThis program is presented by Josephine M. Balzac-Arroyo and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation.

SUMMARY:Clear Sky Toolkit Launch Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Clear Sky Tampa Bay project team invites you to a webinar on June 30th for the release of the Clear Sky Toolkit composed of regionally applicable resources to assess the feasibility of commercial-scale solar + storage to support public safety\, disaster preparedness and post-disaster recovery objectives. \nRecent natural disasters such as Hurricanes Harvey\, Irma\, and Maria have reinforced the necessity of reliable power to sustain essential services and critical facilities\, and interest is increasing in installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems combined with battery energy storage (solar + storage) to provide backup power during electric grid outages. However\, building owners\, operators\, and investors often lack the technical expertise for conducting solar + storage assessments that include disaster risk reduction and broader community resilience benefits. \nWith support from National Renewable Energy Laboratory through Round 2 of the Solar Energy Innovation Network program\, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (TBRPC) led a 15-month collaborative research project to develop a toolkit that offers a more robust\, streamlined assessment process to site and prioritize critical facilities for solar + storage to enhance community resilience\, which can inform decision-making and new investments. \nOn June 30\, 2021\, 9:30-11:00am\, TBRPC will host a Clear Sky Toolkit launch webinar via Zoom to share the process of developing these resources and ways for users to apply the Clear Sky Toolkit within their own community to strengthen energy and overall community resilience. County and City government partners will share lessons learned about energy resilience within their jurisdictions and tips for other users of the Clear Sky Toolkit more broadly. This webinar should be attended by anyone seeking to improve the resilience of communities through targeted applications of solar + storage technology on critical facilities.
