SUMMARY:Free Screening - Corals in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free screening and panel discussion of the Changing Seas episode Corals in Crisis!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nAs part of the Speaking Sustainably Film Series\, South Florida PBS (WPBT2 – WXEL) and the Deering Estate invite you to a complimentary reception and screening of Corals in Crisis on Wednesday\, April 29th at 6:30pm at the Deering Estate Visitor Center Theatre. Reception begins at 6:30pm with light snacks and beverages. The screening will begin at 7:00pm. Following the screening guests can participate in a Q&A with featured experts and the production crew. Event is free and open to the public. \nEpisode description: \nFlorida’s fragile coral reefs are in crisis. Once vibrant cities of the sea\, these biodiverse ecosystems have declined over the past few decades. Fishing pressures\, pollution\, development\, and climate change have all left their mark. \nNow\, a new ailment known as “Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease” may be the last nail in the coffin. This disease is infecting over half of the reef-building corals at an unprecedented scale\, killing most of the corals that get sick. But all hope is not lost. Experts of varying backgrounds are working diligently to figure out what is causing the disease\, while simultaneously developing techniques to treat outbreaks and restore the sunshine state’s coral reefs to their former glory.

SUMMARY:The Space Around Us: A Musical Meditation on Climate Change and Activism
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday March 7\, Tallahassee audiences will be treated to an interdisciplinary performance of chamber music\, poetry and theatre at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA). The concert serves as a gallery activation for the museum’s special exhibition Rising Water\, which highlights artists’ responses to hurricanes and their aftermath. \nThe program is free at 1 pm. \nThe Space Around Us: A Musical Meditation on Climate Change and Activism is a collaboration between Miami-based oboist Carly Gordon and FSU doctoral candidate\, clarinetist Jessica Pollack. Through a diverse selection of contemporary classical works and spoken texts\, the performance will expand upon the themes and artworks of MoFA’s exhibition. Drawing inspiration from such iconic voices as Marjory Stoneman Douglas\, Greta Thunberg and Robin Wall Kimmerer\, the concert will be a one-of-a-kind interactive\, theatrical experience\, exploring the role of activism in a climate-impacted future. \nGordon and Pollack are both alumnae of the prestigious Opera in the 21st Century residency at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity\, where they honed their practice of blending musical performance with text\, narrative and movement. “As musicians\, we are excited about how classical music interacts with other artistic disciplines to tell compelling and urgent stories\,” said Gordon. \nWorks by composers Samson Matthews\, Daniel Morel\, Miklós Rózsa\, Kaija Saariaho\, Eric Salazar\, Asha Srinivasan and Hilary Tann round out an eclectic and vibrant program of chamber music for oboe\, clarinet and electronics. The performers will additionally recite a selection of found texts\, including excerpts from scientific studies\, speeches by climate activists\, and even graffiti found on plywood shutters as depicted by photographer Richard Misrach in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Misrach’s photos are on display in the Rising Water exhibition. \n“We chose these pieces\, these texts\, and this artistic exhibit because they make a more powerful and cohesive message together than they do on their own\,” added Pollack. “We programmed works that would stand on their own as meaningful and interesting\, but\, organized together\, guide the audience through the many complex emotions around navigating and internalizing an idea like climate change.” \nThe Rising Water exhibit deals with intense images\, topics and emotions that juxtapose art and creativity with the urgent but often abstract threat of climate change. The Space Around Us invites museum guests to experience these challenging themes guided by a music-driven narrative. “We want the audience to experience an emotional journey and ultimately leave with a desire to take action\,” Gordon said. \nThe Space Around Us takes place on Saturday\, March 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts\, 530 W Call Street. Admission is free. \nFor more information\, visit: http://thespacearoundus.carlyjgordon.com

SUMMARY:IDEAS Hive -- Let's Love Our Oceans
DESCRIPTION:Oceans are an essential part of the social\, economic and environmental health of our world. Thomas Wahl\, Ph.D.\, dedicates his life to researching the connection between Civil Engineering and the impacts of sea level rise to the plants’ most vulnerable coastal regions. Come join us for a presentation on erosion\, coastal adaptation and how we can prioritize the health of our oceans for the future. \nAbout Thomas Wahl\, Ph.D.\nThomas Wahl is an Assistant Professor for Coastal Risks and Engineering at the University of Central Florida (UCF)\, where he am affiliated with the Civil\, Environmental\, and Construction Engineering Department and the National Center for Integrated Coastal Research (UCF Coastal). He obtained a Diploma in 2007 and PhD in 2012 in Civil Engineering at the University of Siegen in Germany. Afterwards\, he took a postdoc position at the College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida. Before joining UCF in 2017 he was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow of the European Union in Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton\, UK. Through his research he connects engineering and various science disciplines (e.g.\, oceanography\, hydrology\, meteorology\, climatology) to better understand the vulnerability of coastal societies\, built infrastructure\, and fragile ecosystems under climate change conditions. He studies changes in coastal sea levels (mean and extreme)\, ocean waves\, and freshwater flows and the associated impacts to support the development of sustainable and resilient adaptation strategies. \nPlease note: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place.\nCancelling can be done in two easy ways: by calling 407.644.2492 and selecting Option 1 to speak to a representative or by using the online ticket cancellation option in your original confirmation email from Eventbrite.
